Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has urged residents to thoroughly verify the legality of their land and building documents before purchasing or developing property.
His warning comes in the wake of the demolition of hundreds of homes in Stoneridge, which left thousands of people homeless after authorities determined that the structures had been built on illegally occupied land.
Mafume stressed that residents must ensure they have a lawful right to the land they occupy to avoid future losses, demolitions, and legal complications.
He encouraged homebuyers and developers to conduct proper checks through relevant authorities before making any property investments.
The mayor said verifying ownership and development approvals is essential to protecting residents from costly mistakes and heartbreak.
