Mozambique says five of its citizens were killed in xenophobic attacks in South Africa as authorities work to repatriate hundreds of nationals affected by the unrest.
According to Mozambican authorities, violence in Mossel Bay left several people dead, while hundreds of Mozambicans sought safety following tensions linked to allegations that undocumented migrants were being employed by construction companies.
South African police confirmed fatalities and reported that dozens of shacks were destroyed during the violence. Authorities also said an 18-year-old South African man was killed in a separate stabbing incident.
Mozambique confirmed that around 300 citizens returned home over the weekend, while more than 500 others were being sheltered in the Western Cape as repatriation efforts continued.
Some affected residents said they fled their homes after attacks and arson incidents, expressing fears for their safety.
Authorities from both countries continue to monitor the situation as investigations and support efforts remain ongoing.
