A 31-year-old Harare man, Caution Madiro Chikonamombe, popularly known as “Fombo,” has been arrested in connection with an alleged vehicle importation scam that reportedly defrauded several victims of thousands of United States dollars.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the arrest is part of an ongoing crackdown on online fraud, vehicle scams, and fraudulent property transactions.
Investigators allege that Chikonamombe convinced clients that he could facilitate the importation and delivery of vehicles from abroad, leading victims to make substantial payments.
Police say the promised vehicles were never delivered, with reported losses amounting to US$9,000, US$5,000, and US$12,100, bringing the total alleged loss to US$26,100.
Authorities have urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions, particularly those involving vehicle imports and other high-value purchases.
The ZRP has advised prospective buyers to verify ownership documents, confirm business registrations, and conduct independent checks before making payments.
