WhatsApp has officially announced a new username feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their personal phone numbers.
The global rollout of username reservations began on June 29, 2026, with users able to secure their preferred handles by updating the app and navigating to Settings > Account > Username.
According to WhatsApp, the feature is designed to enhance privacy and is not intended to operate like a public social media directory. Users will need to know a person’s exact username before initiating a conversation.
The platform is also introducing an optional username key, which adds an extra layer of security by requiring new contacts to enter both the correct username and a unique key before starting a chat.
The update is expected to benefit creators, businesses, and organizations by allowing them to maintain consistent branding across Meta platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp has clarified that the feature is entirely optional, and users who prefer using their phone numbers can continue doing so without any changes.
