A Zimbabwean team led by Munyaradzi Zhou, Darrel Hunda, and Grey Hungwe has developed an innovative AI Smart Helmet designed to improve safety in high-risk industries, particularly mining.
The smart helmet combines advanced technology, including GPS tracking, motion sensors, alcohol detection, and environmental monitoring systems to provide real-time information on a worker’s location and condition.
The device can issue instant alerts for hazards such as toxic gas leaks, extreme temperatures, and falls, helping to improve emergency response and accident prevention, especially in underground environments.
The innovation gained international recognition after being featured by CNN, attracting interest from technology companies in the United States and China for potential partnerships and large-scale production.
In 2025, the project achieved a major milestone after receiving a Global Award at the Ramsar Convention in Victoria Falls, where it competed alongside entries from 172 countries.
The achievement continues to showcase Zimbabwean innovation on the global stage.
