The U.S. Department of State has warned that Americans with significant unpaid child support debts could have their passports revoked or be denied new passport applications.

According to the department, citizens who owe more than $2,500 in child support are not eligible to receive a U.S. passport under federal regulations.

Authorities said individuals must settle their outstanding obligations before becoming eligible for a new passport or passport renewal.

The State Department also confirmed that valid passports may be revoked, with affected individuals receiving official notifications through email or the mailing address linked to their most recent passport application.

Officials have advised anyone impacted by the policy to contact the relevant state authorities where the debt is owed to resolve the matter.
