Poland’s right-wing opposition has criticised the city of Lublin for hosting an Africa Day Festival and welcoming increasing numbers of African students.

The Africa Day celebration is scheduled for May 29 and 30 and has been described by organisers as a celebration of diversity, intercultural dialogue, and international cooperation.

Criticism intensified after comments from Lublin officials revealed that the city has seen growing numbers of students arriving from African countries including Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and South Africa over the past six years.

Far-right politician Krzysztof Bosak accused city authorities of “populating” Lublin with foreigners, while members of the Law and Justice party warned about immigration and student visa concerns.

However, city officials defended the programme, saying there is “no question of mass migration” and highlighting the economic contribution of international students to the city.

Authorities also stated that most African students return home after completing their studies, while others relocate elsewhere in Europe.
