The Nollywood film industry is in mourning following reports that award-winning actor and entertainer Alexx Ekubo has passed away at the age of 40.
According to family sources, the actor died on Monday, May 11, 2026, after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday by close colleagues and several industry figures, following months of concern from fans over his absence from the public eye and social media.
Tributes have continued pouring in across social media, with prominent stars including Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, Kate Henshaw, and Actors Guild of Nigeria President Emeka Rollas expressing shock and grief over his passing.
Alexx Ekubo first rose to fame after finishing as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition before becoming one of Nollywood’s most recognised actors through roles in romantic comedies and drama films.
He gained widespread acclaim for his performance in the blockbuster movie Weekend Getaway and later earned international recognition when he was named among the United Nations’ Most Influential People of African Descent under 40 in 2020.
His passing marks a major loss for the African entertainment industry.
