Some service stations across Zimbabwe have started accepting payments in the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) as the Government intensifies efforts to stabilise and strengthen the local currency in the economy.

The move follows slow adoption after the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe introduced ZiG in April 2024, when key sectors such as fuel were still largely operating in foreign currencies.

Government is now pushing to mainstream ZiG by requiring part of taxes and public-sector transactions to be settled in local currency, with the goal of reducing reliance on the United States dollar.

In a snap survey conducted in Bulawayo, motorists were seen purchasing fuel using ZiG at selected service stations under controlled conditions.

Industry players revealed that transactions are being processed at varying exchange rates, with most stations limiting the number of ZiG transactions and placing caps on local-currency fuel sales.

Fuel attendants said the system is working smoothly, especially for corporate clients and motorists who earn in local currency.

Many motorists have welcomed the development, describing it as a convenient step toward improving access to essential services using ZiG.
