Police in Mpumalanga used rubber bullets, teargas, and stun grenades to disperse EFF members who attempted to block the N4 highway in Mbombela.
The confrontation followed news that EFF leader Julius Malema had been sentenced to five years in prison for discharging a firearm in public.
Protesters took to the streets in response to the ruling, leading to major disruptions along the busy route.
Authorities intervened after the situation escalated, with law enforcement moving in to restore order and reopen the highway.
No official reports on injuries or arrests have been confirmed yet, as the situation continues to develop.
