A devastating tragedy struck the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road after a commuter omnibus (kombi) reportedly caught fire and exploded, leaving about 18 people feared dead.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the horrific incident happened between Chipangali and the Gwanda tollgate during the early afternoon.
Police say the explosion occurred between 13:00 and 14:00 hours, triggering a massive fire that quickly engulfed the vehicle.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the intensity of the blaze reportedly left little chance for immediate rescue efforts.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are still in the early stages to establish the exact cause of the fire and explosion.
The tragedy also caused major traffic disruptions along the busy highway as recovery teams worked to clear the wreckage and manage the scene.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, as police continue with the process of identification and notifying next of kin.
