Authorities at the Beitbridge Port of Entry have seized explosives worth about R1 million that were allegedly hidden inside a truck during a joint border operation.
The operation involved the Border Management Authority, South African Police Service, and the South African Revenue Service.
Officials say the explosives were discovered in a concealed compartment last Friday after a detailed search of the vehicle.
The truck driver, who had initially claimed he was transporting scrap metal, was arrested after he allegedly attempted to flee the scene.
Police have since opened a case in Musina as investigations continue into the source and intended destination of the explosives.
The seizure has raised fresh security concerns around cross-border smuggling and the movement of dangerous goods through major entry points.
