The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is set to expand the country’s physical currency structure with the introduction of new high-value ZiG banknotes beginning this autumn. The announcement was made during a presentation at the central bank’s auditorium ahead of the 2026 Monetary Policy Statement.

Governor Dr. John Mushayavanhu confirmed that the new denominations will officially enter circulation on 7 April 2026, marking a significant development in Zimbabwe’s evolving monetary framework.

New Denominations to Improve Cash Transactions

The upcoming series of legal tender will include a 50 ZiG note, with denominations extending up to 200 ZiG. The move is designed to streamline cash transactions by providing larger units than those currently available, making everyday commerce more efficient and reducing the need to carry multiple lower-value notes.

According to the central bank, the introduction of higher denominations responds to the growing demand for more portable and practical physical cash in the market.

Celebrating Zimbabwe’s Natural Heritage

In addition to improving functionality, the new banknotes will highlight Zimbabwe’s rich wildlife heritage. The designs will prominently feature the country’s iconic Big Five animals, adding a national identity element to the updated currency series.

Strengthening the Monetary System

The expansion of the currency stock forms part of the RBZ’s broader efforts to refine and stabilize Zimbabwe’s monetary system. By offering a more versatile range of denominations, the central bank aims to ensure smoother daily transactions for businesses and consumers alike.

As the 7 April 2026 rollout date approaches, further details regarding distribution and security features are expected to be released.
