North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly taken a significant step toward shaping the future leadership of the isolated nation by designating his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as his successor. The revelation was shared by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) during a briefing to lawmakers on Thursday, marking a potentially historic development in North Korea’s dynastic political structure.
According to the NIS, Kim Ju Ae’s increasing public visibility alongside her father at major state events has played a central role in their assessment. Once largely unknown to the public, she has gradually emerged as a prominent figure, appearing at high-profile military ceremonies, national celebrations, and symbolic state visits. Her presence at key occasions has sparked widespread speculation among analysts about her future role in the regime.
In September, Kim Ju Ae accompanied her father on her first known overseas trip to Beijing, a move seen by observers as a strategic signal of her growing importance. Lawmaker Lee Seong-kwen disclosed that Kim Ju Ae is now considered to be at the stage of “successor designation.” He pointed to her participation in events such as the founding anniversary of the Korean People’s Army and her visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the mausoleum housing the preserved bodies of North Korea’s former leaders. These appearances are viewed as highly symbolic within the country’s political hierarchy.
The intelligence agency has also reportedly observed indications that Kim Ju Ae may be beginning to voice opinions on certain state matters, suggesting early grooming for leadership responsibilities. As the only publicly acknowledged child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, her rise in prominence has fueled discussions about the continuation of the Kim family dynasty, which has ruled North Korea for three generations.
