The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has expressed serious concern over the growing spread of explicit digital content on social media platforms that is accessible to audiences in Zimbabwe, including minors.

In a press statement dated 03 February 2026, the Authority said it has taken note of content being shared by some social media creators that violates national laws and constitutional values. BAZ warned that the rise in such material poses a threat to the moral and social fabric of society, particularly as children can easily access online platforms.

The Authority emphasized that all broadcasting and digital content consumed within Zimbabwe falls under the country’s legal and constitutional framework, regardless of the platform used to distribute it. This includes social media platforms, streaming services, and other online channels.

BAZ referenced Section 61 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of the media. However, the Authority stressed that these freedoms are not absolute. It pointed to Section 86 of the Constitution, which states that rights and freedoms must be exercised responsibly and with due regard for the rights of others, public morality, public safety, and public order.

The regulator urged content creators and digital platform users to be mindful of the laws governing content dissemination and to ensure that what they publish does not infringe on national standards or expose children to harmful material.

BAZ indicated that it will continue monitoring digital spaces and may take appropriate action where violations of the law are identified, as part of its mandate to safeguard the public interest.
