A man who allegedly posed as a law enforcement officer has been arrested in Norton after reportedly extorting money from unsuspecting motorists by illegally clamping their vehicles.

The suspect, identified as Willard Chimunhu, was apprehended by officers from ZRP Norton on charges of impersonating a Harare City Metro Police officer. According to police, Chimunhu targeted motorists by clamping their vehicles without any legal authority and demanding bribes in exchange for releasing them.

Investigations revealed that the suspect operated under false pretenses, creating the impression that he was conducting official enforcement duties. Motorists who fell victim to the scheme were allegedly forced to pay money to have their vehicles unclamped.

Upon his arrest, police recovered three fake identity cards allegedly belonging to the Harare Metropolitan Police, the Ministry of Defence, and Harare Traffic Law Enforcement. Authorities believe the counterfeit identification was used to intimidate and mislead victims.

Police have since warned members of the public to remain vigilant and to verify the identity of individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers. Motorists are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

The case highlights ongoing concerns around impersonation and corruption-related offenses, with investigations continuing as authorities work to determine whether more victims may have been affected.
