A dramatic escape attempt unfolded this morning at the Harare Magistrates’ Court when a convicted prisoner serving a 45-year sentence for armed robbery and rape tried to flee from lawful custody.
The inmate, identified as 33-year-old Itai Madhongo, allegedly stabbed a prison officer during the attempt, seized the officer’s uniform, and briefly escaped supervision within the court premises. The incident triggered an immediate security alert, with authorities swiftly launching a search throughout the court complex.
In a bold but short-lived disguise, Madhongo was later spotted walking through the Magistrates’ Court corridors dressed as a prison officer. His unusual behaviour reportedly raised suspicion, leading to his quick identification and arrest.
The situation was brought under control within a short time, and the injured prison officer received medical attention. Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities review security procedures following the attempted escape.
