The new year has begun on a difficult note for thousands of travelers from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi who are battling severe congestion at the Beitbridge Border Post. Returnees heading back into South Africa after the festive holidays have been caught in long, exhausting queues, with some reporting waits of more than 15 hours before being processed.

The bottleneck is mainly at the South African immigration section, where a surge in travelers combined with rigorous border checks has significantly slowed movement. Families, cross-border traders, and workers have been left stranded, many spending the night in the open while enduring intermittent rainfall and challenging weather conditions.

For many, the delays come at a critical time as people rush to return to work, school, and business commitments following the holiday break. Tensions have been high as exhaustion sets in, with travelers calling for improved coordination and faster processing to ease the backlog.

Authorities are urging patience as efforts continue to clear the congestion, but the situation highlights the recurring challenges faced at Beitbridge during peak travel periods. For now, thousands remain in limbo, hoping for smoother passage as the new year unfolds.
