South African police have arrested two Zimbabwean nationals after a major bust involving illicit Remington Gold cigarettes worth an estimated R180,000 (US$10,000). The arrests followed a tip-off alerting authorities to suspicious cigarette transportation from Musina to Tzaneen.

According to police, the smugglers were using two white Toyota Corolla Quest sedans to ferry the contraband. Officers later spotted the vehicles heading toward the Tzaneen industrial area, but when they attempted to stop them, both drivers sped off, triggering a high-speed chase.

The dramatic pursuit came to an end near the Tzaneen Sasol industrial area, where police managed to corner both vehicles. Upon searching the cars, officers found them packed to capacity with illicit Remington Gold cigarettes.

The suspects, aged 37 and 48, were immediately arrested and are expected to face charges related to the possession and transportation of illicit goods.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and further arrests have not been ruled out, as illicit cigarette smuggling remains one of the region’s most persistent cross-border crimes.
