Johannesburg authorities have dismantled a sophisticated drug packaging and distribution hub operating from a hijacked property in the affluent suburb of Houghton. The late-night raid on Friday uncovered illicit substances worth an estimated R2 million (US$115,000) and led to the arrest of eight suspects.

The operation was executed by the JMPD Tactical Reaction Unit, working alongside the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety Department. Acting on intelligence about suspicious activity at the residence, officers stormed the property and found a fully organised narcotics packaging centre.

Inside, police discovered large quantities of processed dagga and codeine-based cough syrup, a prescription-only substance increasingly used in illegal drug manufacturing and trafficking across Southern Africa.

Joburg Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku, who was present during the raid, confirmed that the house served as a consolidation hub for drugs destined for international export.

“We came across this house where they were housing a lot of medicine… This cough syrup with codeine requires a prescription. We also found dagga that was destined for Zimbabwe,” Tshwaku said.

Authorities revealed that the contraband had already been carefully packaged into boxes and was ready for shipment to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

The eight suspects arrested at the scene remain in police custody and are expected to face charges including drug trafficking, possession of controlled substances, and illegal occupation of property.

The investigation is ongoing.
