The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will this weekend begin deploying breathalysers and speed trap cameras on major highways as part of a nationwide crackdown on drunk driving and speeding ahead of the festive season.

Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona said the new technology will enable officers to deal “directly and scientifically” with reckless drivers — two of the biggest contributors to Zimbabwe’s fatal road crashes.

“This is about restoring discipline on our roads. These measures will reduce accidents and enhance public safety,” said Minister Mhona.

This marks Zimbabwe’s first large-scale rollout of modern road enforcement tools, introduced alongside a new fleet of VID vehicles to intensify vehicle inspections and fitness checks.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged motorists to act responsibly, stressing the importance of caution and preparedness during the busy travel period.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility. Vehicles must be serviced and certified fit to be on the road,” he said.

Authorities say the crackdown aims to save lives, minimise festive season carnage, and instill a culture of safe driving across the country.
