The Zimbabwe Republic Police has issued a strong warning to drivers and pedestrians against the use of headphones and mobile phones while on the road, citing reduced alertness and a spike in preventable accidents.

Speaking at the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims held at Manyame Bridge along Seke Road, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, Officer Commanding Harare Province, emphasized that distracted road users are increasingly contributing to road crashes.

📌 Key Concerns Raised:

  • 📱 Mobile phone use by drivers AND pedestrians is now a major cause of accidents.
  • 🎧 Headphones limit awareness of surrounding traffic, increasing the risk of being hit or causing collisions.
  • 🚐 Kombi drivers were cautioned, with police highlighting ongoing operations targeting:
    • Unroadworthy vehicles
    • Kombis picking up or dropping passengers at undesignated points

Commissioner Chikunguru urged the public to prioritize safety and remain vigilant on the roads to reduce injuries and fatalities.

Stay alert. Stay alive. 🚦
