Jamaica is facing one of the most devastating natural disasters in its history as Hurricane Melissa, a massive Category 5 storm, barrels toward the island with sustained winds of 175 mph (280 km/h). The slow-moving hurricane, described by meteorologists as the strongest storm ever recorded to hit Jamaica directly, poses an unprecedented threat to life, infrastructure, and the nation’s economy.

The Jamaican government has issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas, including parts of Kingston and coastal communities. Authorities warn of widespread destruction, long-term power and communication outages, and isolation of affected regions once the storm makes landfall.

The storm’s impact is already being felt across the island — the Jamaican Public Service (JPS) reports that tens of thousands are without power, while the Ministry of Health and Wellness has sadly confirmed three storm-related deaths. Neighboring Haiti and the Dominican Republic have also reported casualties as Melissa’s outer bands swept across the Caribbean.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has urged Jamaicans to remain indoors and take all warnings seriously, emphasizing that “no infrastructure in the region is built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane.”

International aid agencies, including the World Food Programme (WFP) and World Central Kitchen (WCK), have mobilized resources and relief teams ahead of what is expected to be a massive humanitarian crisis once the storm passes.

As Jamaica braces for impact, the world watches with heavy hearts — hoping for resilience, safety, and strength for all those in the path of this historic storm. 💔🇯🇲
