China has officially implemented a new influencer regulation law, effective October 25, that mandates content creators discussing sensitive or professional topics—such as medicine, law, education, and finance—to possess and verify official qualifications in those respective fields.

According to the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), the law aims to combat misinformation and protect the public from potentially false or misleading advice. However, the move has also sparked debate among content creators and free speech advocates, who argue that it may lead to increased censorship and restrict freedom of expression online.

Under these new regulations, influencers must provide proof of their expertise, such as academic degrees, professional licenses, or verified certificates, before they can legally post content related to specialized subjects. Platforms such as Douyin (China’s TikTok), Bilibili, and Weibo are now legally responsible for verifying the credentials of these creators and ensuring that all published content complies with the new standards.

In addition to requiring verification, the law also mandates that content featuring research studies, expert analysis, or AI-generated material must include proper citations and disclaimers. Platforms are required to educate users about online responsibility, particularly regarding the sharing and amplification of potentially misleading information.

While the CAC maintains that these measures are designed to “create a healthier online environment,” critics fear that the broad definition of “sensitive topics” could be used to limit open discussion or suppress dissenting views. Some analysts note that the new rules may also affect China’s growing influencer economy, where millions earn a living by creating educational or informational content.

The regulation marks one of China’s most stringent moves yet in the ongoing effort to control online narratives, emphasizing accountability but also reigniting global conversations around digital freedom and state oversight.
