The Zimbabwe Republic Police have warned beer retailers, bars, and liquor outlets that allowing customers to drink now and pay later, commonly known as a “tab” system, is against the law and could lead to the cancellation of operating licences.
Authorities say the Liquor Licensing Act generally requires alcohol sold on licensed premises to be paid for immediately, making most forms of credit sales illegal.
Speaking during a stakeholder consultation on the review of the Liquor Licensing Act, Chief Inspector Tonderai Brian Chigweshe urged liquor operators to familiarise themselves with the law, stressing that ignorance is not a valid defence.
Police noted that limited exceptions exist for certain establishments, such as hotels operating under hotel liquor licences, where registered guests may settle their accounts later under specific conditions.
Authorities say the regulations are intended to promote accountability, reduce disputes over unpaid debts, and encourage responsible alcohol consumption.
