Three people, including two Irish nationals, have each been fined US$110 after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of dagga in Harare.

The accused, Jodie Kinsella (37), Tadgh Joseph Byrnes (23), and Melisa Khan (42), appeared before Harare magistrate Lisah Mutendereki, where the court ruled that failure to pay the fine would result in 60 days’ imprisonment.

According to the State, the trio had booked a room at Rainbow Towers Hotel when detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit received information that dangerous drugs were being kept there.

Police reportedly searched the room with the occupants’ consent and recovered five sachets of dagga from a table inside the room.

The recovered substance was later valued at US$5 on the street market, with investigations leading to the charges and subsequent convictions.
