A search and rescue operation in Budiriro took a tragic turn after three bodies were recovered from a mud pool and sewer line.
The operation began after reports that a resident had fallen into a sewer line where municipal teams were clearing a blockage. During the rescue mission, a sub-aqua team led by Victor Kazembe, popularly known as “Coach Rambo,” worked alongside the City of Harare Fire Brigade to search the area.
While looking for the reported victim, rescuers recovered the body of a young woman who had been reported missing the previous evening. A second body, that of an unidentified male, was later found before the team finally recovered the body of the young man who had initially been reported missing.
The operation continued into the early hours of the morning with support from volunteers, local officials, and emergency response teams.
Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident, while police have launched inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The City of Harare has extended its condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
