Ghana’s government has announced a major relief and support package for citizens being evacuated from South Africa following xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant protests.

According to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, evacuees will receive a Welcome Home Financial Package, transportation assistance, reintegration support, free psychosocial services, and access to a special jobs and startup opportunities database.

Government also confirmed it will fully cover flight costs as part of the emergency evacuation programme.

Around 300 Ghanaian citizens registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria after expressing fears for their safety amid rising tensions.

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said President John Dramani Mahama personally authorised the evacuation operation, with the first group expected to leave Johannesburg on May 21.

Ghanaian authorities said the unrest was fuelled by viral videos showing harassment and attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.

The issue has also reportedly been raised diplomatically with the African Union ahead of an upcoming summit discussion on migrant safety and intra-African relations.
