The social media world has been shaken after Instagram launched a massive cleanup operation widely dubbed the “Great Purge of 2026.”

The platform reportedly removed millions of fake, inactive, and automated accounts within hours, causing follower counts for some of the world’s biggest celebrities to drop dramatically.

Kylie Jenner is said to have lost more than 14 million followers overnight, while Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly saw between 8 and 18 million followers disappear depending on tracking sources.

Other global stars including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, BTS, and even Instagram’s official account were also affected by the purge.

Meta confirmed that the cleanup was part of its ongoing efforts to maintain authenticity and remove inauthentic engagement from the platform.

The company stated that genuine active users were not targeted and that the move is aimed at improving real human interaction online.

The purge has sparked renewed debate about influencer culture, fake followers, and the true value of online popularity in the digital age.
