United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over reports of xenophobic attacks in KwaZulu-Natal following incidents targeting Ghanaian and other African nationals over their immigration status.

In a statement issued on 28 April 2026, Guterres strongly condemned criminal acts that incite violence and exploit difficult socio-economic conditions.

He stated that violence, vigilantism, and all forms of incitement to hatred have no place in an inclusive and democratic society governed by the rule of law and respect for human rights.

The statement followed the South African government’s condemnation of the attacks, with the Ministry of Police describing them as being against the values on which the country’s democracy was founded.

Guterres also reflected on South Africa’s Freedom Day, reminding the public that the country’s fight against apartheid was supported by international and African solidarity.

He emphasized that social and economic challenges must be addressed lawfully and without discrimination against any group.

The remarks come as concerns continue to grow over the safety of foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.
