There was a tragic act of violence in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, following the fatal shooting of Tabeth Chidziwa, a Zimbabwean food vendor, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 2:00 AM on 18 April 2026 and has left a family in mourning while sparking outrage over the senseless nature of the crime.
According to family members who viewed footage of the tragedy, the confrontation began as a dispute over payment for food.
In the recorded footage, Chidziwa is seen engaged in a heated argument with a man dressed entirely in white. The dispute reportedly centered on a meal the man had been served but had allegedly not paid for.
Witness accounts indicate that during the exchange, the man drew a firearm and shot the vendor at close range before calmly walking away from the scene.
The victim’s family described the pain as unbearable, saying her death was a cruel and unfair end for someone who was a central pillar in their lives.
The South African Police Service has been notified of the shooting, but the suspect remains at large as investigations continue.
