A UK-based Ghanaian businessman, Stephen Akuoko (62), has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of breaching food safety laws.
The court heard that Akuoko, who operated Tribal Foods in Watford, stored fish in extremely unhygienic conditions inside his flat, including in a bathtub and on the floor near a toilet.
Prosecutors said he supplied ready meals and fish products to supermarkets and small shops, with some items carrying unusually long use-by dates and missing proper ingredient labels.
The court also heard that he continued distributing food despite official notices, a move described as a flagrant disregard for the law.
In addition to the jail term, the businessman has been banned from operating any food business for five years.
He was also ordered to pay $3,340 in costs within three years.
