Former police detective Jaison Muvevi, who is facing four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder, told the High Court that he was allegedly haunted by goblins at the time of the offences.

Muvevi appeared before Justice Gibson Mandaza, alongside assessors Temba Kuwanda and Hossiah Mujaya, where proceedings in the high-profile case continued.

In a significant development, both the State and the defence agreed by consent to admit evidence from 29 witnesses, as well as various exhibits, without raising objections. This means the court will rely heavily on recorded testimonies and submitted material rather than calling each witness to testify in person.

The prosecution has indicated that it will call only one live witness, a psychiatrist who examined Muvevi, whose testimony is expected to be central in determining the accused’s mental state at the time of the alleged crimes.

Muvevi’s claims of being haunted introduce a complex dimension to the case, particularly around questions of criminal responsibility and mental fitness. The court is expected to carefully assess psychiatric evidence as it weighs the serious charges against him.

The trial continues as the High Court examines both the factual and psychological aspects of the case before reaching a final determination.
