Iconic South African producer and composer Lebo M has filed a $20 million lawsuit in a California court against Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi.

The lawsuit alleges defamation, damaging misrepresentation, and unlawful commercial exploitation following a viral comedy routine centered on the lyrics of The Lion King.

The dispute arises from Jonasi’s interpretation of the famous opening chant “Nants’ Ingonyama bagithi Baba.” In stand-up performances and during an appearance on the One54 Africa podcast, Jonasi joked about an alternative meaning of the Zulu lyrics.

Lebo M, who composed and performed the original vocals for the Disney classic, argues in his legal complaint that the joke goes beyond humor. He claims it distorts and trivializes the artistic work, potentially damaging his professional relationship with Disney.

The case has sparked debate online, with some pointing out that similar jokes were previously made by Zimbabwean comedian Carl Joshua Ncube without legal consequences. Others note that international entertainers have also joked about the chant in the past.

However, Lebo M maintains that African creatives have a responsibility to preserve and respect cultural integrity on the global stage.

The case is expected to draw significant attention as it unfolds in court.
