Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart has renewed debate over team selection after questioning why Ben Curran was not included in the national squad.
Curran had been drafted into the team setup as a potential replacement for Brendan Taylor, but he was not selected during key matches, including the fixtures against Sri Lanka national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team.
Many fans believed these matches presented a good opportunity to test Curran, especially during stages where the stakes were lower. Concerns were also raised after Zimbabwe’s middle and lower-order batters struggled to keep up with the pace of games during the Super 8 stage, with the team’s strike rate falling below expectations.
Analysts argue that Curran’s inclusion might have helped strengthen the batting lineup. However, Zimbabwe Cricket maintains that team selections are based strictly on player performance.
Observers say Zimbabwe may need stronger and more consistent performances if the team hopes to compete successfully for major International Cricket Council trophies
