A 17-year-old schoolgirl from Uzumba, identified by the pseudonym Molita, has given birth to twins while continuing her education — a situation that has sparked national debate over whether contraceptives should be made available in schools.
The young mother’s story came to light after social media user Fagii Marowa shared an emotional post on Facebook, appealing for public assistance for Molita and her newborn babies.
According to Marowa’s post, Molita gave birth in August, after reportedly falling pregnant by a fellow student who is now said to be “on the run.” Despite her circumstances, the resilient teenager has continued attending school while trying to balance motherhood and her studies.
The post was accompanied by a photograph showing Molita in her school uniform, holding one of her babies while fellow students helped care for the other — an image that has since gone viral and drawn widespread attention across Zimbabwean social media.
Marowa’s appeal read in part:
“I think something needs to be done muzvikoro umu. Can we now say it’s time to consider contraceptives in schools?”
Her words have since reignited conversations around teenage pregnancy, sexual health education, and access to reproductive healthcare for young people — issues that continue to challenge many communities across Zimbabwe.
Reports suggest that Molita is now back in class, determined to complete her studies despite facing immense financial and emotional struggles. Fellow students have been stepping in to assist her with the twins during lessons, a gesture that reflects both compassion and the difficult realities facing teenage mothers in rural areas.
Community members and well-wishers have since begun mobilizing donations of baby clothes, formula, food, and other essentials to support the young mother.
The story has also brought renewed focus to the lack of comprehensive sexual education and contraceptive access in Zimbabwean schools — with activists and educators calling for urgent policy reviews to protect vulnerable students.
As the public continues to rally behind Molita, her story stands as both a heartbreaking reminder of the country’s teenage pregnancy crisis and an inspiring testament to the resilience of a young girl determined to pursue her dreams against all odds.
