Women, children, and activists across South Africa took to the streets on Friday in a powerful nationwide demonstration against gender-based violence (GBV).

Organised by Women for Change, the movement saw participants holding silent 15-minute lie-downs and marches in towns and cities across the country.

On pavements and in public squares, women lay motionless on the cold ground — a symbolic act representing the countless lives lost to GBV. The silence was heavy and emotional, drawing the attention of large crowds who paused to witness the powerful scenes unfolding in major urban centres.

The nationwide shutdown aimed to send a strong message: South Africa has had enough of violence against women and children.

The movement is calling for:

  • Greater government action
  • Stricter enforcement of GBV laws
  • Improved protection for victims
  • Accountability and justice for perpetrators

As the demonstrations continue to gain momentum, activists hope this united stand will spark meaningful change and honour the victims whose voices were silenced too soon.
