Robert Mugabe Jr, the son of the late former President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, has been fined US$300 or face four months in prison following his conviction for illegal possession of cannabis (dagga).
Mugabe Jr was found guilty after the court ruled that he unlawfully possessed two grammes of dagga, valued at US$30. The offence stemmed from an incident in which police recovered the substance, along with rolling papers and a crusher, during a traffic operation in Harare.
Although he avoided jail time by opting to pay the fine, the case has drawn public attention due to his high-profile background and the country’s strict drug laws.
The conviction serves as a reminder that drug-related offences carry serious consequences in Zimbabwe, regardless of one’s social or political status.
