The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has formally proposed expanding the Premier Soccer League (PSL) from 18 to 20 teams, beginning with the 2026 season — a move aimed at aligning the local league structure with international football standards.

In a letter addressed to PSL CEO Mr. R. Thabe, ZIFA commended the league’s strides toward professionalization and outlined its vision to enhance competition, inclusivity, and football development across the country.

According to the proposal, the expanded format would:
✅ Provide greater opportunities for teams from all regions to compete at the highest level.
✅ Promote regional balance and talent identification, ensuring more representation nationwide.
✅ Increase the commercial and broadcasting value of the league through additional fixtures and fan engagement.
✅ Strengthen the football development pipeline, giving more players, coaches, and administrators exposure at elite levels.

As part of the plan, ZIFA also intends to launch a National First Division League to serve as a feeder to the PSL — standardizing competition structures and improving promotion and relegation systems across regions.

If approved, the expansion would mark a major milestone in Zimbabwean football, ushering in a new era of growth, professionalism, and opportunity for clubs and players nationwide. ⚽🇿🇼
