The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has appointed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa as its interim chairman, following Madagascar’s decision to step down from the position due to ongoing political turmoil.
In a communiqué issued after the Extraordinary Virtual Summit, SADC confirmed that Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina, who assumed the chairmanship in August 2025, had relinquished the role after being ousted from power on October 14. The regional body acknowledged Madagascar’s inability to continue its leadership duties amid the country’s unfolding political situation.
“Summit acknowledged the decision by the Republic of Madagascar to relinquish her role as Chair of SADC, following recent political developments that have impacted her capacity to discharge the responsibilities of the position,” the official statement read.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will now lead SADC in an interim capacity until the next SADC Summit scheduled for August 2026. The organization expressed appreciation to the South African leader for stepping in to ensure continuity and stability within the regional bloc.
“Summit expressed its appreciation to His Excellency Mr. Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, for convening the Extraordinary Summit and accepting to chair the regional body,” the communiqué stated.
Ramaphosa’s appointment comes at a crucial time for SADC, which continues to navigate a complex landscape of political tensions, economic challenges, and security issues across Southern Africa. His leadership is expected to focus on strengthening regional unity, promoting democratic governance, and advancing sustainable development within the bloc.
