His impressive career includes working with top clubs such as Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Inter Milan, AS Monaco, and Liverpool FC, as well as national teams including Paraguay, Mauritius, Malawi, and Liberia.
The Romanian-born coach is best known for guiding Malawi to the Round of 16 at the 2022 AFCON, achieving the country’s best-ever tournament performance and earning international recognition for his tactical prowess. Under his leadership, Malawi also recorded their highest FIFA ranking climb in June 2024.
ZIFA President Ngobile Magwizi expressed optimism about the appointment, saying:
“We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe. His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results at the international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era.”
Magwizi added that the appointment aligns with ZIFA’s vision to build a competitive and sustainable football structure that can produce consistent results both locally and internationally.
Marinica joins on a one-year contract and will assume his duties immediately, beginning preparations for the upcoming friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar, as well as laying the groundwork for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
Fans across the country are hopeful that his arrival will reinvigorate the Warriors and restore Zimbabwe’s presence on the African football stage.
