Durban – Qualification Hangs by a Thread
Bafana Bafana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a major setback after they were held to a goalless draw by a ten-man Zimbabwe in their penultimate Group C qualifier at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday evening.
Despite dominating possession and creating several opportunities, South Africa failed to find the back of the net, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
Group C Standings Tighten
In another crucial Group C fixture, Benin secured a 1–0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali.
The result saw Benin move to the top of the group with 17 points, while Bafana Bafana dropped to second place with 15 points.
The draw means that South Africa must now rely not only on their own performance but also on other results to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What Bafana Bafana Need to Qualify
Bafana’s qualification fate now lies in a must-win final match against Rwanda on Tuesday.
To keep their World Cup dream alive, South Africa must beat Rwanda and hope that Nigeria either defeats or draws with Benin in their final group match.
| Team | Points | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Benin | 17 | Top of Group C |
| South Africa | 15 | Must beat Rwanda |
| Nigeria | 14 | Still in contention |
| Rwanda | 13 | Eliminated |
| Zimbabwe | 9 | Out of contention |
Zimbabwe Down to Ten Men
The Warriors of Zimbabwe went down to ten men early in the second half after a red card for a reckless challenge, but Bafana Bafana were unable to capitalize on the numerical advantage.
Coach Hugo Broos expressed frustration after the match, admitting his side lacked the finishing edge required at this level.
“We had the chances but didn’t take them. At this stage of qualifying, small margins make the difference,”
said Broos.
Fans Left Frustrated
Supporters at the Moses Mabhida Stadium expressed disappointment after watching their team struggle to break down a resilient Zimbabwe defense.
Social media reactions reflected growing concern about South Africa’s inability to finish off games when it matters most.
