South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs says only 10 out of the 300 Ghanaian nationals who applied for repatriation were legally in the country.
The statement comes as protests against undocumented migrants continue across parts of South Africa, prompting Ghana to organize repatriation flights for citizens wishing to return home.
Home Affairs Immigration and Law Enforcement Head Stephen van Neel said the majority of applicants were either undocumented, had overstayed, or were not complying with immigration regulations.
Officials also confirmed that some Ghanaians were turned away due to incomplete documentation and may be considered for a second repatriation flight later this week.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Kofi Quashie, urged calm and rejected any calls for retaliation, saying Ghana remains committed to pan-African unity and cooperation.
Authorities from both countries say state institutions, not individuals, should handle immigration and deportation matters lawfully.
