Zimbabwe has officially joined South Africa and four neighboring countries in a joint bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations.
The proposal, led by South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, includes Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and Mozambique in a regional effort to bring the tournament back to Southern Africa.
The alliance is expected to meet in Harare on May 17, 2026, alongside the COSAFA elective congress to finalise co-hosting plans.
Officials say the bid will prioritise stadium readiness, with emphasis on existing infrastructure rather than future promises.
For Zimbabwe, the initiative comes as a major boost to efforts to restore key sporting facilities.
The National Sports Stadium in Harare is nearing readiness, with pitch installation and sprinkler systems now operational.
Authorities are optimistic the stadium could soon host domestic matches, marking progress toward regaining international certification.
The joint bid is seen as a significant step toward reviving regional football and showcasing Southern Africa on the continental stage.
