Drivers operating under the inDrive platform staged a peaceful protest in Chitungwiza on Monday, demanding fairer fares amid rising fuel and maintenance costs.
Dozens of drivers gathered at a local football pitch, parking their vehicles in a coordinated demonstration to highlight concerns that current pricing is no longer sustainable.
Drivers said increasing fuel prices have significantly impacted their operations, while fares on the platform have remained largely unchanged. Under inDrive’s system, passengers propose fares that drivers can accept, reject, or negotiate, but many drivers claim the offers are often too low.
“We can’t continue like this,” one driver said. “Fuel is going up, maintenance costs are rising, but the fares customers offer are still too low. It’s no longer business, it’s survival.”
The protest remained peaceful, with drivers engaging in discussions and exploring ways to push for improved pricing.
The situation reflects broader challenges in Zimbabwe’s transport sector, where operators continue to face rising costs for fuel, spare parts, and daily living expenses. Drivers are now calling on both passengers and the company to ensure fair pricing that supports their livelihoods
