Ex-convict Bernard Hwete, widely known as Liquid Yonke, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison, with five months suspended, after being convicted of theft.
Hwete has since returned to Harare Central Prison, less than two years after his previous release.
During court proceedings, Hwete told the magistrate that he declined an offer to perform community service, arguing that cleaning the city is the responsibility of the Harare City Council.
He explained that the incident stemmed from a night out along Nelson Mandela Avenue, where he met a woman who had stolen an iPhone from another customer. Hwete claimed he took the phone from her and later offered the owner US$40 as compensation.
However, the matter escalated after the owner was informed of the phone’s true value, leading to a police report and subsequent arrest.
The case has drawn attention due to Hwete’s recent criminal history and the circumstances surrounding the offense.
