An outbreak of bacterial meningitis at the University of Kent has resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with 11 others currently hospitalized in serious condition.
In response, the UK Health Security Agency has begun distributing antibiotics to students in the Canterbury area as a precautionary measure.
Health experts have identified the strain involved as Neisseria meningitidis, which can spread rapidly through close contact. Meningitis is a serious condition that causes inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Common symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and confusion. Authorities are urging anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention, as the illness can worsen quickly.
Officials are particularly concerned about individuals who may have been exposed but are not yet showing symptoms. Preventative antibiotics are being administered to stop the bacteria from developing into a full infection.
Vaccination and early treatment remain critical in managing and preventing the spread of meningitis.
