The Zimbabwean government is developing a new policy that could see children under the age of 18 banned from popular social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.
Information Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Tatenda Mavetera announced the proposal during an address in Karoi on Sunday, stating that the main objective is to protect young people from various online risks.
According to the minister, restricting access to these digital platforms could help create a safer online environment for children across the country.
The proposal has already sparked widespread debate. Supporters argue that the move is necessary to shield minors from cyberbullying and harmful online content, while critics believe that improved digital education and guidance on responsible internet use may be a more effective long-term solution.
The discussion is expected to continue as government consults stakeholders on the possible implementation of the policy.
