Zimbabwe’s music fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the passing of iconic Sungura legend Nicholas Zakaria, widely celebrated as the “Senior Lecturer” for his unmatched influence and mentorship in the industry.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed earlier today through an official statement released on the Nicholas Zakaria & Khiama Boys social media platforms. The announcement, attributed to the Zakaria family, expressed “profound sadness” at the loss of a talented musician and beloved member of our community.

Zakaria, revered for his powerful vocals and exceptional guitar skills, leaves behind a rich legacy that shaped the very foundation of Sungura music. The family highlighted his enduring impact, noting that he has made “an indelible mark on the music world with his inspiring voice and dedication to his craft.”

With a career spanning several decades, Nicholas Zakaria was instrumental in building one of Zimbabwe’s most influential music movements. As the founder and leader of Khiama Boys, he played a pivotal role in nurturing and mentoring some of the nation’s biggest stars—including the legendary Alick Macheso—earning him the distinguished title of Senior Lecturer.

His contribution to Zimbabwean music goes far beyond his own recordings; it lives on in the countless artists he guided, the fans he inspired, and the genre he helped shape.

Nicholas Zakaria’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to resonate across generations.
