The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has officially responded to a viral social media video showing an altercation between police officers and a motorist during a traffic enforcement operation in Budiriro, Harare. The incident, which sparked widespread public outrage online, prompted an immediate review by the police command.
In a statement released by National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the ZRP acknowledged the incident and confirmed that disciplinary measures have already been taken against the three police officers involved. Commissioner Nyathi emphasized that the police leadership “does not condone such conduct” and that swift internal action has been initiated to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the force.
He further stated, “The Police command does not condone such conduct by police officers and has since taken appropriate action on the three police officers with immediate effect.”
However, Commissioner Nyathi also urged members of the public—particularly motorists—to remain respectful and law-abiding when interacting with law enforcement officers. He cautioned against the use of obscene or vulgar language towards officers during lawful arrests or routine operations, noting that such behavior can escalate tensions unnecessarily.
The ZRP reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and ethical policing, while also calling on citizens to cooperate in maintaining order and safety on the roads.
This latest development underscores the police force’s ongoing efforts to reform internal practices and rebuild public trust, following several similar incidents that have drawn criticism over the years. The force has pledged to continue taking decisive action against any officer found engaging in unprofessional or abusive behavior.
As investigations continue, the public has been encouraged to report cases of police misconduct to the ZRP National Complaints Desk through official communication channels, to help promote accountability and uphold the integrity of the service.
